The motor then runs at full speed, exactly like it would without the soft starter. A soft starter controls the start and the stop. It doesn’t control the speed in between.

A variable frequency drive, or VFD, controls the frequency and voltage going to the motor, which lets it control the motor’s speed continuously, from a crawl all the way up to full speed and anywhere in between.
Because it is always in the circuit, a VFD gives you things a soft starter simply cannot:

- A built-in soft start, since ramping up is part of how it works anyway.

When is a soft starter the right choice?

Reach for a VFD when:
- You need to run the motor at different speeds to match production, flow, or demand.
- The load is a variable-torque pump or fan. This is the big one. Slowing a pump or fan even a little produces a large drop in power draw, so a VFD can cut energy use significantly on these loads.
- You need precise control of speed, torque, tension, or position for your process.
- You want full torque at low speed, which a soft starter cannot deliver.
If your process changes and the motor needs to keep up, a VFD is worth the extra cost and complexity, as long as you understand what a VFD is and how it can fail. On variable pumps and fans especially, the energy savings alone can justify it.
What is the most common mistake people make?
The most frequent mistake we see is buying a VFD purely for its soft start feature, then running the motor at full speed all the time and never using speed control.

The better question isn’t “which is cheaper today?” It is “will this motor ever need to run at different speeds?” Answer that honestly, and the choice usually takes care of itself.
